I don't usually post links to other blogs, but Philip Pullman is worth reading. His point is that the worth of public libraries cannot be measured by the "free" market system. And he says it far better than this daughter of a librarian could.
Besides, who else would be able to mention both "Finn Family Moomin Troll" and "Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition" in the same blog post?

Thanks for sharing that article.
I've been giving a lot of thought to this question lately. I was a college student at the time of the election in which Reagan defeated Carter. And over the years I've noticed that the market fundamentalists have slowly destroyed the world I knew as a child; a world in which it was not questioned that there were good reasons for maintaining institutions that did not make money or were not inhumanly efficient.
I'm not sure what the way out of this trap is, but I'll surely keep pondering the problem.
